Windows are great in any home. They let in light and let us see out into the world. Windows let in fresh air but keep out the elements when closed. We have windows in almost every room in our homes, and they need to be treated as part of the overall decor. Bare windows can feel cold and drafty and can let strangers see into our private spaces if not covered. Curtains for windows can take many forms from kitchen cafe curtains to formal custom drapery treatments. We want our window treatments to cover the window when needed, but we also want to be able to open them easily to let in fresh air and for us to see out.

Draperies are the more formal of window treatments, and they are most often installed on traverse rods that make it possible to open the drapes by pulling a cord. Many curtains for windows are less formal and easier on the budget. Where pleated draperies have to be the exact measurement of the window width and length, other styles of curtains are gathered on a rod and have adjustments for width built in. Many people prefer the informality or ease of installation of curtains over formal draperies. There are many varieties of curtains to choose from, but most curtains are flat panels of some sort with rod pockets or tabs on the top. Gathering them on a decorative rod makes the style and fullness.

Depending on the decor in each room of your home, you choose the curtain color, pattern and style. Tab top curtains are more tailored and masculine. If you have a bay window, there are bay window curtains designed to cover the multiple windows and angles. Rod pocket curtains can be made or purchased to fit any window or area. They can be used for door panel curtains, country kitchen or cafe curtains, bedroom window curtains with blackout lining, or even shower curtains used with a shower curtain liner.

Before you go shopping for curtains for windows, take careful measurements of each windows' length and width. Window length includes the area between the rod and the bottom of the window,or the floor for floor length curtains. If there is no rod, you need to purchase rods that are the correct type and strength for your curtains. They need to be installed a short distance above your window frames and a little beyond the sides of the window. The space at the sides of the window are for curtain stack back when you open the curtains. Make sure you install the rod brackets with support so they don't come loose. With rods in place and measurements taken, you are ready to purchase the curtains of your choice for each room.
